SEPTEMBER ROGUE READS

 

       Join us on Monday, September 14th at 7 pm EDT (5 pm Mountain Time)! This month's featured authors are: Rob Pobi, our own Rogue Lynne Constantine with her new L.C. Shaw book, Robert Desidario, and Samantha Downing with Lisa Black as MC. Following a brief introduction each of our guests will talk about their work, and then read for about three minutes followed by Q&A. Join us in the Zoom  room where the first 100 will have the chance to ask questions live. Everyone else can catch the event by clicking on Facebook Live where you can ask questions via comments. We'll be monitoring both chats throughout the evening, so come prepared.

        Then, as a special treat, each of our guests has paired a favorite snack food with their favorite drink providing a recipe for an enjoyable evening. You can find the recipes below, and trust us, the Rogues will be cooking all day. Drinking will commence at the start of the show!

Rob Pobi can be found either at his place on a beach or up in the mountains at his cabin

where there is no telephone, internet, or television. Even when he has internet access he does not do social media, though he is learning to tolerate email. His grandfather was a professional artist and Rob spent many years as an antiques dealer.

His character Lucas Page is an astrophysicist, a university professor, a father, a mathematical savant and misanthrope. In Under Pressure a tech gala at the Guggenheim is bombed. Page agrees to help the FBI with the investigation provided he can avoid all the other agents.


What does he like to snack on? 


Oysters


Things don’t have to be complicated: 2 or 3 dozen oysters (we can discuss species all day—just go with what you like), a shucker (I’ve used a screwdriver in a pinch but my go-to is an old hunting knife that I shaped on a grinder), and a simple but tasty Mignonette Sauce (1/2 cup red wine vinegar mixed with ¼ cup chopped shallots—the white parts only). If you’re a novice with a shucker, make sure to position the oysters on a folded up bar mop and to keep plenty of Band-Aids on hand. 


And to go with the oysters? 


Whiskey Sour:


- whisk one egg white

- add 1 cup of sugar and whisk

- add 2 cups club soda or sparkling water

- add 2 cups fresh squeezed lemon juice

- whisk entire concoction


To serve, fill a double old-fashioned (I prefer Ittala’s Ultima Thule – it’s design is miles ahead of traditional pinwheel cut crystal, it has a heavy bottom so it wont tip over if left on the arm of a chair, and it has a nice heft so it can be lobbed through a windshield in a pinch) with large ice cubes, add 3 ounces of any whiskey (or commercial scotch such as Johnny Walker Red) and sour mix to taste. Drink. Repeat. Drink. Repeat. Have your liver re-vulcanized. 


Robert Desiderio is from New York City and spent many years as an actor before discovering the fun of writing. He now splits his time between New York and LA with his wife, actress Judith Light. Many novelists find that making the jump from novels to screenplays is more difficult than they expect, and Robert had the same experience in reverse--accustomed to writing screenplays, a novel was a new challenge. But he found himself with a question he had to answer--what if the war on terror came to an end because the leader of ISIS had a mystical experience?

 

 Pasta Semplice (Pasta Simple):


This recipe is for one person. Double, Triple or Quadruple it depending on how many folks you’re serving.
1. Sauté handful of chopped onions (red, white or yellow, your choice) in a bit of olive oil.
2. Put in anchovies (as much or as little as you prefer. I use 4-5 anchovies/person.) Stir. The anchovies will disappear, but the flavor remains.
3. Put in a half small can of tomato paste.
4. Add white wine, not too much, but enough to thin out the paste a bit.
5. I love crushed hot, red pepper (I’m Italian:) so depends on your taste tolerance for food with some fire. Stir the ingredients a bit.
5. Cook pasta in a separate pan, a bit of salt in the water. Spaghetti is best, but your call.
6. When pasta is cooked to your taste mix all ingredients in a large bowl. I don’t use grated parmesan for this one, but, again, it’s your call.

        As for a drink of choice, the lead journalist in his story, Dominique Valen, likes to drink a vodka tonic in a martini glass.


You know our Lynne Constantine as one half of the writing team Liv Constantine, as a former business exec who loves to scuba dive, but she also writes as L.C. Shaw. Her book The Network introduced us to Jack Logan, former bodyguard turned reporter, who stumbles onto an organization dedicated to unleasing unspeakable evils onto the planet--and Lynne has just released it's sequel The Silent Conspiracy. In it, Jack pieces together seemingly unrelated and bizarre murder/suicides, while Taylor is producing a story about a class action suit against a national insurance company. As they start to suspect that their stories are connected, they realize there is something far more insidious at play that could not only directly threaten them—but the very future of the country.


        Lynne's favorite snack? Almonds, veggie sticks, or popcorn

        Favorite drink? Iced coffee with a generous portion of almond milk and stevia. Favorite drink with alcohol in it? Red wine!
